Pushing my creativity with Alvina

Pushing my creativity with Alvina

Pushing my creativity with Alvina in Edmonton, AB.

As a photographer, I always try to push myself and to push my creativity and this is what I did with Alvina, at the end of last year in Edmonton. We did that portrait shoot in my apartment in Edmonton and it was great to create for me.

Alvina is a make-up artist, a student, a model. She is a creative herself, so it was great to collaborate with her on that session. I never saw someone posing so easily and being so intense while also being so natural and peaceful.

As usual, I kept my posing pretty simple and minimalist. The only things I wanted to use for this session were this black stool and the white curtains. They are both from IKEA and they are super cheap! Hahaha! I also shot a little bit under-exposed, so my images have lots of grain. It was starting to be very dark in the end, but I actually like the results.

I edited these images with the Wolf Pack presets by Tribe Archipelago. Those are my all-time favourite presets.

A girl, a puppy and VW bus

By Emilie Iggiotti

After shooting with the old red car, Tara told me one of her friends has a VW bus that she would let us use for the shoot. So we headed there and let me tell you, we were not disappointed. That Volkswagen van was a gem! The colour was perfect.

The gazelle and the old red car

The gazelle and the old red car

The gazelle and the old red car by Emilie Iggiotti

I have this thing with old cars and I can’t help it. I love old cars. And I really wanted to do a shoot with an old car but I did not know anyone who had an old car with lots of character.

Then I met my friend Tara (aka Akward Gazelle on Instagram) and one day, as I was watching one of her stories on Instagram, I saw that she is in a very fancy red car. I asked her whose car it was, and she said that it is her boyfriend’s car. Then I said: would you mind doing a shoot with me with that car? And she said yes!

So, fast forward a few months later, when we were finally able to find a date and plan the photo session. We had lots of fun!

I must add something: Tara did all the styling of that session. She has such great taste and an amazing style. It’s so easy to collaborate with her. She just comes up with these amazing outfits. So, all you have to do is pose her and take photos. Seriously, this is unbelievable. I am trying to convince her to become a stylist for all my shoots. Haha!

If you think she has great style, please say it in the comments!

We pray

We pray

We pray.

By Reg Madison

“The thing about us women… we pray. Whether we call it that or not. Ceaselessly. Reverently. Desperately. We pray. Over the simmering pot of I love you too much to let you go hungry, to the mindfulness in striking the match, it’s all prayer. When we turn off and tuck in, we pray. Through each I’m not good enough and How can I possibly? We pray. When we steal 4 minutes in the bathroom while catching our breath, 3.5 of those are spent in utterances of sanctification.
Over our earth. Over our children. Over our people. Over ourselves.
We are women, and each step we take is a walking meditation calling in spirit to move and guide us that we, as women, can keep the diamonds of faith tethered to our hearts.
Through sighs of exhaustion and the syphoning of resources, whether to a Him or Her or both. We ask. We thank. We pray. Through restless feet and tireless duty, through night and day and in stolen moments of powerlessness, we offer it up and out.
Because we know from our mothers, and their mothers’ mothers, that the only way to taste heaven with both feet covered in soil, is to expand like an acrobat with folded hands and open hearts. And surrender.
We pray with a mysticism that keeps crops sprouting, tides rolling and winds changing. We stay on our knees to see God, not to be noticed by a godless society. We Houdini 4 loaves from 2 because guess what? God honours that shit.
There is a knowing in our bones. Something that is silently declared when our parents are told, “It’s a girl.” We will live a life of reverence. We will exalt all that is holy. We will baptize and be baptized in lifetimes of bleeding truth. And when we are drowning in tears of self-doubt and shame, we take the pause, lean in and practice acceptance. All within a prayer.
Before we learn to talk or walk or say no, we pray. Before we leave this life on earth, we pray. Before we wake. Pray.
In our art, in our gaze, in our laps.
With supplication and grace, we pray.
We bathe in it. Breathe fire with it. Move mountains through it.
And dance intimately beside it.
In gratitude, in awe, in humility.
For peace, for patience for strength
Because we honour that space between here and there
Because even the mundane requires it
And the sacred gives evidence to it.
Because we can’t afford not to.
We are women.
And we pray.”

A night at the Drake Hotel in Toronto by photographer Emilie Iggiotti

My friend Robin and I had the huge pleasure of spending a night at the Drake Hotel while we were visiting Toronto. Of course, we had to take photos because the location is great and the hotel is just amazing. If you follow me on Instagram, and saw my stories, you know that we had a great time.

The decoration at the Drake Hotel Toronto is amazing. Every detail is hand-picked. Basically, we just need to wander in the hotel to find all types of interesting decor items. Every corner is perfect for a photo shoot, or for Instagram pictures. The room was very nice too. Not a big fan of the bathroom situation (it’s just a curtain which separates the bathroom area from the bedroom, so this means no privacy), but it was really just a detail.

I loved the Drake Hotel Café too. Maybe you have seen the picture with that green couch on my Instagram. The Drake Hotel Toronto actually reposted that image on their own Instagram account.
