Portrait of Mary in the forest

Portrait of Mary in the forest

A portrait of Mary in the forest…

Wow! I can’t believe I never blogged these images of Mary in the forest, taken in 2017 in British Columbia. It’s about time!

Also, a portrait from this session has won a final place at The Voice competition organized by Clickin Moms and Click Magazine. And I got to win my own print of my photo!

The winning photo combines two of my favourite subjects to photograph: nature and a woman’s face. Maybe it will be the beginning of a series, actually. In fact, there is something magical about a woman photographed in a forest, surrounded by trees and leaves, sitting on the ground and celebrating her life and her beauty. So, I hope these photos make you stop and think for a second. Indeed, think of nature, think of the beautiful women in your life, think of what you want your images to be, and what you want people to feel when they see them.

For the technical details:

Green is definitely my favourite colour to photograph. I am obsessed with these tones!!! Give me all the shades of green!

Playing with light with Devyn

Playing with light with Devyn

It’s not a secret that I love to play with the light. I am obsessed with light and shadow.

A few years ago, I remember trying to explain to someone that “I can see the light”. They look at me like I was the boy in The Sixth Sense telling Bruce Willis “I see dead people”. Hahaha! But what I was trying to say is that I can see where the light is, if the light is good, and how I can use in my photographs.

As a portrait photographer in Edmonton, winters can be long, so I learned to shoot indoors and play with the light and create interesting images. I really think that being limited by the light and the location can sometimes help you be more creative, and it pushes you out of your comfort zone.

So, with Devyn, it was winter, I wanted to shoot outside and I did not have any artificial light so everything you see was photographed in natural light.

We started in my bedroom. There is a corner next to the window which has some interesting light. I used my curtains to bring more light or limit the light. I don’t think we need lots of props when photographing someone, especially if you are making portraits. Just focus on your subject.

So, a chair, some good light and a photogenic model… this is what I had for my session with Devyn.

Don’t be afraid of shadows. Not every photo needs to be in full light. Shadows can actually bring some mystery and mood to your photographs. Embrace them!

She has the best smile!

Purging my closet

Purging my closet

I am going to get a bit personal here for a minute…

I have a clothes situation and it’s not pretty. The truth is that I gained some weight the past two years and my body changed and it won’t be the same ever again. I have been holding onto those clothes to be ‘fit again”, to motivate me to lose weight, to go back to the gym. But let me tell you something that no women magazine or newspaper tell you: when you get older, you don’t just gain some weight, you actually become wider, and some body parts keep growing. I am not kidding guys! Nobody tells you that shit. I’m not necessarily bigger or heavier. But my butt does not fit into that old pair of jeans, my belly can not stand those low rise jeans anymore and that cute dress makes me look like I had two burgers for lunch.

After 35 years old, your body changes. I was going to the gym every day, exercising, trying to keep up with the younger girls and their tiny body. I did not understand why I could not lose those stupid kilos like before. It should be easy: eat healthy, exercise and you will lose the weight. IT’S A LIE. After 35 years old, your body knows. It knows that you are trying to trick it into starving and sweating. Your body knows what you are trying to do and it’s tired of it. At least, mine is tired of it. And I feel like it just keeps blossoming and taking the space it wants to take in this world of perfection and restriction. More hips, more boobs, more belly, more butt… it’s just my body now and I am not going to tell it how it is supposed to be anymore.

So back to my clothes… all these clothes which don’t fit me anymore. For the past six months, I have been wearing the same pair of jeans over and over again, because it is the only one which fits me. So, my friends, it’s time to say goodbye to my closet. I feel bad for all these pretty dresses, pants and shirts which are sad because I am not wearing them anymore. But they deserve a new home and some love. They deserve to be out in this world. They don’t need to be attached to my shame anymore. I want to make them free.

So, I am participating in this bloggers’ sale on March 26th. And if you want to buy some nice clothes at a very interesting price (everything will be under $50), you should come see us at Vacancy Hall in Edmonton. My goal is not to make money. Lots of stuff will be at $5 or $10.

I am starting over because I deserve it. My body deserves it. It deserves respect for taking me anywhere I want and for being healthy. I’m done treating my body like it is something I should be ashamed of or something imperfect. It’s perfect, it’s beautiful and it’s a gift from the Universe (or from God if you are religious). Let’s all celebrate our bodies and treating it with respect.

So mark your calendar: Bloggers’ Sale, March 26th, from 10am to 6pm at Vacancy Hall in Edmonton.
Mercer Warehouse, Lower Level

P.S.: I’m all about eating healthy and exercising. This post is not about adopting bad habits or promoting obesity. But it’s more about accepting our bodies the way it is. It’s about living peacefully with our image instead of trying to become what we think society wants us to be.

Why should small businesses invest in professional photos?Edmonton Commercial Photography

Why should small businesses invest in professional photos?

Why should a small business invest in professional photos? I asked myself this question when I arrived in Edmonton a few months ago. This is when I started looking for brands and companies that I wanted to follow and buy from. With the holidays coming, and the popular hashtags such as “shoplocal” or #smallbusinesssaturday”, I thought it was the perfect time to give some tips to my fellow small business owners. And as an Edmonton commercial photographer, and a small business owner, I am in both camps.

So you are a small business, you just started and you think you don’t need any professional photos.

You have a website, an Instagram page and a Facebook page. You are busy doing your thing, working on your products, developing your clientele. But the last thing you want to invest in is photography. Photography is expensive, you don’t have the budget for it, you’d rather put the money in advertising, or Facebook ads. You believe in your products, your restaurant, your shop. You think that your advertising will come from word of mouth after a few months.

I hear you, this is what every small business thinks but let me tell you something: we now live in a visual world. Everything is curated, people only post the best selfies of themselves on social media, everyone wants to see beautiful and clean photos when they access your super fast website on their phone or their tablet. Actually, do you know that most people shop from their phone now? So, think of all the possibilities you are missing because you did not invest in some really good professional photos. Also, don’t forget that word of mouth now starts with social media. Someone talks about that new place they like, their friends go there, take a photo on Instagram, share it with their followers, and so on and on. Remember that your window display is now your social media channels. So, if you have to invest in it as much as you take time arranging products in your window shop.

People will find you on social media, if they like what they see, they will come visit your shop or your website. It’s not the other way around anymore.

A small business should invest in professional photos with no doubt. Because without good visual content, your customers won’t adhere to your brand.

So, here are the reasons why a small business owner should invest in professional photos.

  • professionalism: you need professional images taken by a professional photographers because they have the gear to make your products look legit and professional. Did I say “professional”? The issue with pictures that you take yourself is that it looks “amateur” and you don’t want your clients to think you are an “amateur” or not a serious business.
  • consistency: you need images, visuals which are consistent. This means that your images are a reflection of your brand, your logo, your style. Everything has to be consistent. You can not post a blurry picture one day, and then a professional picture the other day. Your customers will get lost. Be consistent.
  • time saving: your photographer will deliver a finished products, he/she will give you images that are ready to post. When you are a business owner, the time that you save focusing on what you are supposed to do and not doing something else is very important. You are not a photographer, so why would you spend all these hours trying to take pictures of your products/shop/restaurant? Unless you are a passionate photographer and this is your hobby, there is no point wasting your time with that.
  • organization: sure it takes time to organize a photoshoot, but after the photoshoot, all you have to do is pick one picture from all the images which were delivered and post on social media.

And if you are still hesitant, here are a few more of the advantages of taking professional photos for your small business:

  • you will have lots of pictures that will last a few months: no need to organize a photoshoot every week, just plan a big photoshoot and you will have images for your social media channels for a few weeks
  • you will have beautiful edited pictures of your products, shop, brand, restaurant…
  • no more time spent trying to understand how to use that fancy complicated camera you got for your birthday, who got time for that? Well, a professional photographer has time for that because it’s his/her job!!!! Don’t try to be Superman or Superwoman trying to do everything and anything in your business.
  • your customers will appreciate the effort you put in developing your brand and sharing these images with them. Have you seen the Instagram of big companies like J Crew or Gap? The images used are always impeccable. And yes, photography is accessible to every type of businesses. Just reach out to your local photographer!
